When Jesus found Unbelief on their part He said: "Who will be My helpers to (the work of) Allah." Said the disciples: "We are Allah’s helpers: We believe in Allah, and do thou bear witness that we are Muslims. 53. "Our Lord! we believe in what Thou hast revealed, and we follow the Messenger then write us down among those who bear witness." 54. And (the unbelievers) plotted and planned, and Allah too planned, and the best of planners is Allah. 55. Behold! Allah said: "O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself and clear thee (of the falsehoods) of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject faith, to the Day of Resurrection: Then shall ye all return unto me, and I will judge between you of the matters wherein ye dispute." [16] Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. [17] These things I command you, that ye love one another. [18] If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. Welcome!Thank you for taking the time to learn about God’s plan for us. We have been hoping and praying you would find your way here... Muslims Seeking Jesus (MSJ) is a not-for-profit ministry dedicated to helping Muslims and Christians have a closer relationship with God through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. MSJ is made up of volunteers from all Christian denominations. MSJ provides information, referral services and moral support to those who are seeking to learn more about the Christian faith, but are not sure where to begin. Because of their faith, there are many Muslims around the world who are very kind, loving and caring people. We want them and others to know how Jesus came into the world to teach us how to love and obey God much the same way a child loves and obeys their parent. Jesus also taught us how to care for each other through the Love of God, the Holy Spirit. We come to Jesus first to learn about God because he was filled with the Holy Spirit his entire life. Jesus is our "mediator" with God who teaches us through the Holy Spirit how to purify our hearts and souls so we may one day be worthy to stand in the presence of God. This is why Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (The Gospel, John 14:6).Jesus was a gift from God to all mankind. We give thanks and praise to God for loving us so much that He sent Jesus to show us the path to eternal life. We honor God when we honor Jesus who suffered greatly to his death so we could witness his resurrection which was the final proof that the Gospel truly leads us to eternal life. The first step in discovering the path to eternal life is to read the Gospel. Then we have to live it, so we can feel it transform our lives. Our overall goal is to help people understand the simplicity and wisdom of the Word of God brought to us by the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ so we may develop a spirituality and inner-peace that will guide us through this life and into the next. The Connection Between the Qur'an and the GospelSome people may be surprised to learn that Islam and Christianity share many of the same virtues and values. This makes sense since there are similar teachings throughout the Qur'an and Gospel. In the Arabic language, the word Islam means “surrender” or “submission”—as in the "submission to the Will of God." A follower of Islam is called a Muslim, which in Arabic means “one who surrenders to God.” The Arabic name for God, is “Allah”.Surrendering all of our desires of this world to serve and love God is what Jesus called the “first of all the commandments”:
And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? [29] And Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: [30] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. [31] And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these." (The Gospel, Mark 12:28-31)
The connection between teachings in the Qur’an and the Gospel is undeniable. The Gospel existed approximately 570 years before the Qur’an and is referenced throughout the Qur’an over ten times. For example:
The Qur'an: It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong). (Surah 3:3, The Family Of 'Imran, The House Of 'Imran)The Qur'an: O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the scripture which He hath sent to His Messenger and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messenger., and the Day of Judgment, hath gone far, far astray. (Surah 4:136, Women)The Qur'an: Say: "O People of the Book! ye have no ground to stand upon unless ye stand fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord." It is the revelation that cometh to thee from thy Lord, that increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy. But sorrow thou not over (these) people without Faith. 69. Those who believe (in the Qur'an), those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Sabians and the Christians, any who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and work righteousness, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. (Surah 5:68-69, The Table, The Table Spread)
However, the Qur’an and Gospel do differ in some important areas. This is because Muhammad believed that Allah (God) chose him to bring new "revelations" (teachings) to the people because they had either strayed from the Gospel or had rejected the Gospel. Muhammad claimed to receive revelations from the Angel Gabriel (Jibril) and shared these revelations throughout his life which were collected together to become the Qur’an.The religion of the Qur'an is Islam, although many Muslims will profess Islam has been the only religion since the beginning of time. When Muhammad ruled Medina and conquered Mecca, he made special provisions for "People of the Book" (Jews and Christians) to be allowed to practice their faith even though Muhammad declared the newly established religion in these cities would be Islam.The "People of the Book" loved God with the same conviction that Muhammad did. Muhammad must have realized there was something special about "the Book" and its people. This may be because there are multiple references in the Qur’an honoring Jesus and the Gospel:
The Qur'an: We gave Moses the Book and followed him up with a succession of apostles; We gave Jesus the son of Mary Clear (Signs) and strengthened him with the holy spirit. Is it that whenever there comes to you an apostle with what ye yourselves desire not, ye are puffed up with pride?- Some ye called impostors, and others ye slay! (Surah 2:87, The Cow)The Qur'an: And in their footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Law that had come before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light, and confirmation of the Law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear Allah. (Surah 5:46, The Table, The Table Spread)
Since Muhammad believed the Qur’an was the direct word of God, and the Qur’an references the Gospel favorably in multiple instances, it makes sense that Muslims should feel a connection to the Gospel. It really is a special "Book" from God. Muhammad and Jesus - The Same, Only DifferentMuhammad and Jesus both loved God very much and encouraged their followers to do the same. Both also claimed that God had chosen them to bring His Word to the people and teach them. However, some of Muhammad's teachings contradicted Jesus' teachings. This was also reflected in their lifestyles. Anyone who has read about Muhammad and Jesus can see they led very different lives and were very different leaders (see, "History of Muhammad and Jesus"). Without question, Muhammad and Jesus brought many sinners and unbelievers to God through their ministries. This continues today. However, since Muhammad and Jesus both claimed to be sent by God, why would there be contradictions between what they taught and how they lived since both professed to live their lives according to the Will of God?Muhammad believed that Allah (God) chose him to "Fulfilleth His plan" and bring new "revelations" (teachings) to the people because there were disagreements and confusion over the Gospel for hundreds of years. Disagreements and confusion existed even when Jesus first taught the Gospel. Muhammad viewed this as a sign that God did not give Jesus all the teachings that the people needed:
The Qur'an: Those apostles We endowed with gifts, some above others: To one of them Allah spoke; others He raised to degrees (of honour); to Jesus the son of Mary We gave clear (Signs), and strengthened him with the holy spirit. If Allah had so willed, succeeding generations would not have fought among each other, after clear (Signs) had come to them, but they (chose) to wrangle, some believing and others rejecting. If Allah had so willed, they would not have fought each other; but Allah Fulfilleth His plan. (Surah, 2:253, The Cow)
However, there is something very important that needs to be pointed out about the Gospel. Jesus predicted there would be people who would not understand, nor accept the Gospel and conflict would arise:
Jesus said: “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. [33] But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. [34] Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. [35] For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. [36] And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. [37] He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. [38] And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. [39] He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. [40] He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth Him that sent me. [41] He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.” (The Gospel, Matthew 10:32-41)
The more we learn about what Muhammad taught, and the more we learn about what Jesus taught, the more we see how both professed a different bond and relationship with God. We think it is normal for people to want to know why there seems to be some contradictions in the type of relationship God wants to have with His People. Why "Muslims Seeking Jesus" beganThe MSJ ministry evolved from a weekly Bible study class held in Queens, NY. One night, the class shared their experiences about people who had asked them questions about the life and teachings of Jesus. It was very interesting that almost everyone in the class had an experience about a Muslim coworker or friend who wanted to know more about Christ. Muslims asked questions like, "Why did Jesus call himself the Son of God?"; "What did Jesus mean when he said we have to 'eat his flesh and drink his blood?'"; "How can we be sure that Jesus was crucified, died on the cross, and rose from the dead?"; "Can you explain the Holy Trinity and how God can exist in three forms?" And, "What is the 'New Covenant' Jesus created between God and mankind?"The answers to these questions may be obvious to a devout Christian. However, to someone who has never been exposed to the Christian faith, these are good questions that may be difficult to understand if not properly explained. By the way, the answers to these questions are found throughout the MSJ website.The class started talking more about Islam and the beliefs of our Muslims friends and neighbors. Some people in the class were familiar with the Qur'an so they shared what they knew and pointed out some of the major differences between Islam and Christianity (see, "Similar Teachings" and "Different Teachings"). What we quickly realized is that the relationship between God and a Muslim is quite different, in some respects, than that of God and a Christian.One of the biggest differences between Islamic and Christian beliefs is that Christians believe we are all the "children of God" and view God as a "Father figure"—someone who loves us very much, yet expects us to follow His Will. Another difference is that Christians believe Jesus takes away our sins when we welcome his Spirit into our hearts and promise to follow his teachings. We then need to grow spiritually with the help of the Holy Spirit of God so our souls can be purified to stand in the presence of God in the next life. This is what Jesus taught in the Gospel.Muslims believe God is an entity unto Himself solely to be worshipped, feared and pleased by His People. God has no direct relationship with people except through the teachings of the Prophets that He sent. God had no children, nor should any of us consider ourselves to be the children of God in a spiritual sense. Also, Muslims do not recognize the presence of God's Love in the world through the Holy Spirit, thus there is no "Holy Trinity of God". These viewpoints of God create a different bond and relationship with God from that of a Christian.Everyone thought our discussion was fascinating and by the time the class ended one thing was for sure. Everyone had varying degrees of knowledge of how to explain our Christian beliefs to someone who has never studied the teachings of Jesus Christ. We also learned that Islam and Christianity share many of the same morals and values. Sadly, we also realized that many non-Christians have been told a variety of things about Jesus and Christianity that are just not true. It occurred to us there may be other Muslims who have questions about Jesus and the Gospel, but are not sure who to ask. The Holy Spirit guided us to begin an organization dedicated to helping Muslims, and Christians, understand the Gospel better so they too can learn more about the path to eternal life. We hope and pray everyone realizes it is only when we live our lives according to God’s teachings and authority that we discover the inner-peace, spirituality, wisdom and love that leads us to eternal life. Devout Muslims and Christians understand when we put our relationship with God first, our outlook and desires in life come from what God wants for us and not what we want for ourselves, or from others in this world. This creates a very different perspective on life. A perspective that actually helps us enjoy life better because we understand our real purpose in life—to prepare our souls for the next life. Once we begin to prepare our souls for the next life, this life takes on a whole new meaning. A meaning that connects our mind, heart and soul with the world to come instead of the world we live in. We find inner-peace and spiritual strength when we do this.When we study the Qur’an and the Gospel, we discover that what Muhammad taught his followers veered away from what Jesus taught his followers, in some areas. This is why the relationship Muslims have with God can be quite different from the relationship Christians have with God. The Qur’an does not teach that we are all the children of God like the Gospel does. The Qur’an teaches that Allah (God) is an all-powerful deity that is to be worshipped, obeyed and revered from a distance. And although the Qur’an teaches that Allah is kind and merciful and cares for His People very much, the overall teachings of the Qur'an create a different "bond of love" with God than the bond of love Jesus taught us.A Christian’s "bond of love" with God is grown from a more "personal" or "family" oriented type of love much like a child has for their parent. This type of relationship comes from Jesus emphasizing that we are all the "children of God". And although there is much acceptance and forgiveness from the parent to the child, the parent still expects the child to obey their commands and grow in wisdom, understanding and acceptance of their purpose in life. Again, that purpose is to prepare their soul for the next life. The more we understand what our Father in Heaven wants us to know from Jesus, the more our level of spirituality, love and respect for God grows. This is how we prepare and purify our souls to be ready to stand in the presence of God when the time comes. And we never know when that time will come. Evidence Jesus Rose from the Dead
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. [26] When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, "Woman, behold thy son!" [27] Then saith he to the disciple, "Behold thy mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. (The Gospel, John 19:25-27)
Some people will not believe what is written in the Gospel until someone can prove to them Jesus rose from the dead. They rationalize, "If Jesus rose from the dead, then he must have been someone special sent by God. If you can prove to me Jesus rose from the dead, then I will believe he really was the Son of God..." Basing our faith in Jesus and the Gospel solely on whether or not we believe Jesus rose from the dead, would be a mistake. The real proof the Gospel contains the path to eternal life is what we feel happening inside of us once we commit to living our lives according to the Gospel. When we make this commitment, we can literally feel a transformation happening in our heart and soul. This transformation is our soul growing and maturing in the same kind of wisdom, patience, kindness, peace, compassion and love that God has for us. It is the same kind of love God has for us because what we feel growing inside of us is the Love of God. As our souls grow and mature in the Love of God, we develop an inner-peace that helps us to cope with the challenges and turmoil we face in our daily lives. It is the Love of God that also purifies our heart and soul. Anyone who truly believes in Jesus, and lives their life according to the Gospel, knows how it feels to have the Love of God dwelling in them. We can literally feel our heart and soul being purified from sin by Jesus and the Holy Spirit—the Love of God here on earth—which is our preparation to one day stand in the presence of God. Feeling the Love of God dwelling in us is the real proof the Gospel contains the path to eternal life in the Kingdom of God. However, for those of us who are skeptical about wanting to live our lives according to the Gospel and need more “logical” proof what Jesus taught truly is the path to eternal life, please consider this:
Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. [70] But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. [71] And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. [72] And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. [73] And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee. [74] Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. [75] And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, "Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice." And he went out, and wept bitterly. When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: [2] And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. (The Gospel, Matthew 26:69-75; 27:1-2)
After Jesus was arrested and crucified, his Apostles went into hiding out of fear that what happened to Jesus would happen to them. It appeared the ministry Jesus had grown for three years was suddenly over. Who would be crazy enough to preach the Gospel knowing full well you would be tortured and killed the way Jesus was killed? Imagine you were a follower of Jesus back then. You had just witnessed Jesus beaten in the street with hundreds of people laughing at him, spitting on him, cursing him. You then saw him nailed to a wooden cross to die a slow, painful death because of what he taught and believed. After seeing what happened to Jesus, you now know the same fate will happen to you if you continue to teach and believe in what Jesus taught and believed. Would it not be easier just to return to your simple life as a fisherman, physician, merchant, tax collector, etc., and not go through the agony of being whipped, flogged, beheaded and crucified like many of the Apostles of Jesus would later be? What would have to happen to make the Apostles (or any of us) overcome our fear of being humiliated, tortured and killed for preaching something so controversial at the time as the Gospel? The answer is, we would have to see and hear something so astonishing that we would believe, without any doubt, what Jesus taught was the absolute truth. What people saw and heard, or rather, who people saw and heard—was Jesus. Think about it. If someone were teaching you they were going to rise from the dead because of what they believed in, and then they did not rise from the dead, you would think that person was a liar and imposter. Why profess their teachings to others if what they taught you was not true and it meant you would be killed for teaching the same thing? However, the Apostles (and many others) did follow Jesus' teachings—right to their own deaths. Why would they do this? The answer is, because they saw with their own eyes that Jesus had risen from the dead. What Jesus taught them about eternal life was true! After Jesus appeared to his Followers, and on several occasions, (please see, "Over 500 Witnessed the Resurrection of Jesus") they finally understood and believed everything Jesus was trying to teach them—the Gospel really does contain the path to eternal life. This knowledge, along with the Comforter (the Holy Spirit), gave the Apostles the strength and courage to go out into the world and preach the Gospel despite knowing full well they too would suffer to their deaths. But the Apostles gladly went to their deaths because they finally understood how their souls would live forever in the Kingdom of God. Seek, and Ye Shall FindWe believe there are many people who are searching for a more personal relationship with God based on the same warmth, acceptance, forgiveness and love that a parent has for their child. We also believe if some Muslims understood the Truth about the Gospel, they would better understand the path to eternal life. We also believe that if some Christian’s put as much conviction and devotion into their relationship with God as some Muslims do, they would truly understand what it means to be "Born Again" and "Saved".
Jesus answered and said unto him, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God." [4] Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? [5] Jesus answered, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. [6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. [8] The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit." (The Gospel, John 3:3-8)
It appears Muslims and Christians can learn from each other... Imagine the understanding and spirituality a typical Christian would have if they put as much passion into their relationship with God as a practicing Muslim does. Imagine the revelation a Muslim would have if they believed in Jesus and asked him to come into their heart to help them understand the path to eternal life through the Gospel. The level of spirituality, kindness, forgiveness, inner-peace and inner-strength would be quite remarkable—for both. Maybe then the majority of the world would begin to realize we are truly brothers and sisters and all part of the same family—God’s Family. Muslims Seeking Jesus is a ministry dedicated to helping Muslims and Christians understand how the Gospel truly brings inner-peace, spirituality and eternal life to those who understand and follow God's Authority through the Teachings of His Son, our brother, Jesus Christ.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] The same was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. [4] In Him was life; and the life was the Light of men. [5] And the Light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. [6] There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. [7] The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. [8] He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. [15] John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. [16] And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace. [17] For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. [18] No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. [19] And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? [20] And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. [21] And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. [22] Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? [23] He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. [24] And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. [25] And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? [26] John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; [27] He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. [28] These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. [29] The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. [30] This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. [31] And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. [32] And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. [33] And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. [34] And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. (The Gospel, John 1:1-34)Jesus cried and said, “He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on Him that sent me. [45] And he that seeth me seeth Him that sent me. [46] I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. [47] And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. [48] He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. [49] For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, He gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. [50] And I know that His commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.” (The Gospel, John 12:44-50)
